Arquitectum: London 2008
The challenge involves the design of a mobile architecture gallery built to contain and distribute – both metaphorically and literally – ideas for the city as whole. This installation will travel along the River Thames, connecting in this way a number of artistic spaces, and picking up visitors along the riverbank, particularly at South Bank.

Architectural design of a contemporary art museum building
The city of Wroclaw has announced an international competition for the architectural design of a contemporary art museum building. The Wroclaw Contemporary Museum will house an outstanding collection and will occupy a prime location at the heart of the city's historic Old Town. It aims to create an open and dynamic contemporary art ecosystem instead of a museum in the traditional sense of the word.

CPH City and Port Development has launched an open international ideas competition for the Northern Harbour in Copenhagen, a new urban development area with room for 40,000 residents and 40,000 staff in buildings with a total floor area of three to four million square metres.
The vision for this unique site, which features waterfronts on three sides, is to create a dynamic, lively and sustainable city district with diverse, effervescent life and room for a broad mix of residents and enterprises.
The competition is open to everyone, but is in particular aimed at urban planners, architects, landscape architects and traffic planners, who are very welcome to collaborate with experts in special fields, eg sustainability.
Total prize money amounts to DKK 3 million. The jury can select between one and five winners of the competition. If more than one winner is selected, the winners will be invited to negotiations with CPH City and Port Development about adjustments/improvements to their entries so that the assessment panel can select the final winner. If CPH City and Port Development decides to continue work on the basis of the winning entry, such work will be carried out in collaboration with the winning entrant.

WA Community Awards
The aim of the WA Community Awards is to highlight and publish remarkable projects that might otherwise remain unnoticed by the international public but have the potential to inspire exciting questions about contemporary architectural discourse.
Registrations are completely FREE and without extra costs so that all architects can participate both as candidates and judges.
Architects from ALL countries can submit ALL of their buildings (realized or not) for the appreciation of the WA Community. Recent projects (not older than 10 years) will have more chances to be shortlisted for the Awards. Students, landscape architects, engineers may also submit for the awards projects they are the author of: we do not check or accredit diplomas.
Projects submitted to the WA Portal prior to this announcement will also be considered for the award program. But these pages should be updated by their authors to meet the submission requirements for a better presentation of work.
Deadline for submissions to be evaluated for the Awards is July 25, 2008. Please note that early submissions will have more chances to be recognized and move higher in the ranks before the Final Assessment Panel.

Live The Box
The partnership of AIA Newark and Suburban and the Young Architects Forum invites international designers to find innovative, visionary and compelling proposals for container constructed multi-family mixed-use project.
The competition is entirely presented and managed via the website, www.livethebox.org.
The Competitors are required to register for the competition prior to submitting their entries. In order to complete registration, competitors must submit a registration fee. The registration fee is $150 USD for professionals and $75 USD for students. The registration period for this competition is from April 15, 2008 to June 24, 2008, while the submission deadline is July 31, 2008.

SOCIO DESIGN - International Student Design Competition

Between Architecture and Sociology is the recognition of spatial impact on the psyche of society. To understand this impact fully is perhaps impossible. But to understand that it exists is the opportunity to use design to change the world.
Intent:
To encourage social change through design-based dialog.
Questions:
How are prisons used by societies?
What is their affect on those societies, their caretakers, and their occupants?
Challenge:
Design a philosophy on what imprisonment is or should be, and create an architectural design to express that philosophy.

World Architecture Festival Awards
At the heart of the Festival will be the biggest architectural awards programme in the world.
The 2008 awards are for buildings completed between 1 January 2007 and 20 June 2008. Buildings in any country, by architects of any nationality, are eligible for entry.

Concurso de Ensaios sobre Oscar Niemeyer
No âmbito da celebração do 100º aniversário de Oscar Niemeyer a Faculdade de Arquitectura (UP) lança um concurso para elaboração de um texto de reflexão teoria/crítica, em português, aberto a todos os estudantes de arquitectura de faculdades portuguesas e brasileiras e a todos os estudantes da Universidade do Porto.
Objectivo
Elaboração de um texto original (não publicado) de reflexão sobre a obra e/ou vida de Oscar Niemeyer.
Apresentação
O texto não poderá exceder os 7.500 caracteres (notas e eventuais legendas incluídas); o título será destacado; fonte Times New Roman 12; a 1, 5 espaços; justificado.
Serão entregues cinco impressões do ensaio (texto e imagens) em papel A4 branco; todas as páginas serão identificadas pelo mesmo número de código no canto superior direito e numeradas (1/x, 2/x(...), x/x) no canto inferior direito.
Imagens (facultativo): as imagens ou serão directamente integradas no corpo do texto ou se forem enviadas em folhas próprias, estas deverão ser numeradas e identificadas pelo mesmo número de código, acompanhadas ou não de legenda(s).
A data limite para entrega dos ensaios é 15 de Setembro de 2008 (carimbo dos correios)

Green Project Awards distinguem trabalhos na área do ambiente
Foram hoje apresentados os Green Project Awards, uma iniciativa do grupo GCI, empresa de consultoria de comunicação, em conjunto com a Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (APA) e a associação ambientalista Quercus. Este projecto pretende reconhecer publicamente trabalhos realizados na área do ambiente e sustentabilidade e, consequentemente, contribuir para uma maior consciencialização ambiental e para o desenvolvimento de projectos sustentáveis.

Os prémios a atribuir enquadram-se em três categorias: projectos; investigação e desenvolvimento; e comunicação. Serão aceites candidaturas de projectos já concretizados ou que já tenham sido objecto de publicação ou dissertação, nas áreas de: ecoeficiência, construção sustentável, arquitectura bioclimática, energia, água, ar, resíduos, biodiversidade e conservação da natureza, florestas, e transportes. Na categoria de comunicação serão aceites relatórios de sustentabilidade e campanhas e acções de sensibilização e informação.
Poderão candidatar-se empresas, gabinetes de projectos, organizações não governamentais, estabelecimentos de ensino, centros de investigação, municípios, agências municipais, juntas de freguesia, empresas e agências de comunicação, cientistas em nome individual e associações.

ar awards for emerging architecture 2008
The AR Awards for Emerging Architecture is the biggest and best award for young architects in the world and gives £15 000 in prize money. Inaugurated in 1999, it is sponsored by Buro Happold and Wilkhahn. Intended to bring wider international recognition to a talented new generation of architects and designers, the Awards have attracted entries from more than 90 countries, representing every inhabited continent.
Awards are for built or manufactured work only, and besides buildings, the full range of design activity, from landscapes and urban spaces to furniture and cutlery can be submitted.
The Jury for 2008 will be Sir Peter Cook (architect and critic, London), Peter Davey (Former Editor of The Architectural Review), Sou Fujimoto (AR Awards winner in 2006 and twice highly commended, Tokyo, Japan), Mathias Klotz (Santiago, Chile), Sheila O'Donnell (O'Donnell & Tuomey, Dublin, Ireland) and Paul Finch (Editor of The Architectural Review and Chairman of the Jury).

“Arquitectura Sustentável – Perspectivas e Práticas de Intervenção”
A “Arquitectura Sustentável – Perspectivas e Práticas de Intervenção” é o tema do seminário que o Município de Barcelos vai promover nos dias 5 e 6 de Junho, no auditório dos Paços do Concelho. A iniciativa é destinada a arquitectos, engenheiros, professores, profissionais de construção, técnicos, estudantes e público em geral, sendo que as inscrições são gratuitas mas obrigatórias.

Assunto de grande actualidade e de múltiplas abordagens, pretende-se com este seminário abordar a utilização racional dos espaços, no sentido de que possibilite uma melhor qualidade de vida e uma resposta positiva aos desafios ambientais das sociedades modernas.
Neste encontro, face aos sintomas da crise ambiental global, os diversos especialistas vão equacionar as possibilidades da construção sustentável associada à eficiência energética e à utilização de materiais resultantes de resíduos de construção ou de demolição.
Por outro lado, quando se fala em edifício sustentável, eventualmente, pensar-se-á, em técnicas sofisticadas, quando também é verdade que existem aspectos que a qualquer obra deveria atender, desde a compra do terreno até à construção, passando pela arquitectura.
Outro dos factores a ter em conta é a factura energética. A redução dos seus custos leva-nos a repensar a utilização dos materiais e a optar por tecnologias biocompatíveis, contribuindo assim para uma melhor eficiência energética dos espaços, quer no momento da sua projecção ou aquando da sua reabilitação.
No desafio que lança para este tema, a autarquia de Barcelos diz que um edifício bem projectado e construído pode ter um custo acrescido no imediato, mas que as futuras poupanças de energia vão absorver o investimento inicial, dando razão à frase: “Na poupança é que está o ganho”.
