The Scotswood Expo Architectural Competition is a new international design contest promoted by Newcastle City Council for one of the country’s largest regeneration projects. Run by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Competitions Office, the competition seeks fresh thinking in the design of new housing.
Our aim is to select six design teams to develop innovative housing designs which respond to the challenges of environmental sustainability, adaptability, new ways of living and designing beautiful buildings. The Competition seeks to develop designs for plots to create a family of demonstration houses or prototypes that will be built for the Expo event and sold on thereafter.

All designers who participate in this unique competition will be part of the solution to the Global Warming Crisis by replacing one of their old light bulbs with a compact fluorescent light bulb provided by The Design Green Project. Additionally, there will be a tree planted in their name and 50% of all proceeds will be donated to the StopGlobalWarming.org fund, just for entering.
Due to incompatiablities in voltage and connections, designers who participate outside the United States will not receive a light bulb, however, a tree will be planted in their name and 50% of their entry fee will be donated to the StopGlobalWarming.org fund.

Outstanding architecture not only meets high aesthetic criteria, but also fulfils its function – right down to the last detail. Only when aesthetics and technology combine to form a whole is exceptional architecture created. DETAIL's aim and raison d'être is to present these solutions to a wider audience.
Following the large International response to the 2005 and 2007 DETAIL Prize competitions and the success of the symposium at the BAU trade fair, DETAIL, in collaboration with the Bavarian Chamber of Architects and the Association of German Architects - Bavaria (BDA Bayern e.V.), will once again award the DETAIL Prize in 2009. Prizes are awarded to buildings that feature especially well-designed, groundbreaking and technically-innovative details within an outstanding overall design.
By choosing new categories, a greater emphasis will be placed on cross-sectoral connections and interdisciplinary networking. For the first time the DETAIL Prize will be expanded to include an industrial prize and an honorary prize.
The DETAIL Prize is awarded to innovative details incorporated into outstanding overall designs. The products should not only resolve technical problems but also, and more importantly, form a significant detail and play a decisive role in the overall design.
The DETAIL Industry Prize is aimed at manufacturers and developers of innovative building products and technical solutions, as well as at architects and engineers who have made use of these products. Entrants should show how their innovative products, integrated into the overall concept of a reference building, play a distinctive role and contribute to the success of the overall design.
Only projects built to completion and finished after 1st January 2004 may be submitted for the main prize and the special prizes. The exception is the special prize for students, which recognises student projects from 1 January 2004 onwards.
The competition is open to architects, structural engineers, interior designers and landscape architects around the world who are authorised to use these professional designations. The special award for students is open to graduates and students of the corresponding fields.

CPH City and Port Development has launched an open international ideas competition for the Northern Harbour in Copenhagen, a new urban development area with room for 40,000 residents and 40,000 staff in buildings with a total floor area of three to four million square metres.
The vision for this unique site, which features waterfronts on three sides, is to create a dynamic, lively and sustainable city district with diverse, effervescent life and room for a broad mix of residents and enterprises.
The competition is open to everyone, but is in particular aimed at urban planners, architects, landscape architects and traffic planners, who are very welcome to collaborate with experts in special fields, eg sustainability.
Total prize money amounts to DKK 3 million. The jury can select between one and five winners of the competition. If more than one winner is selected, the winners will be invited to negotiations with CPH City and Port Development about adjustments/improvements to their entries so that the assessment panel can select the final winner. The aim of the WA Community Awards is to highlight and publish remarkable projects that might otherwise remain unnoticed by the international public but have the potential to inspire exciting questions about contemporary architectural discourse.
Registrations are completely FREE and without extra costs so that all architects can participate both as candidates and judges.
Architects from ALL countries can submit ALL of their buildings (realized or not) for the appreciation of the WA Community. Recent projects (not older than 10 years) will have more chances to be shortlisted for the Awards. Students, landscape architects, engineers may also submit for the awards projects they are the author of: we do not check or accredit diplomas.
Projects submitted to the WA Portal prior to this announcement will also be considered for the award program. But these pages should be updated by their authors to meet the submission requirements for a better presentation of work.
Deadline for submissions to be evaluated for the Awards is July 25, 2008. Please note that early submissions will have more chances to be recognized and move higher in the ranks before the Final Assessment Panel.

prisoned challenge
Between Architecture and Sociology is the recognition of spatial impact on the psyche of society. To understand this impact fully is perhaps impossible. But to understand that it exists is the opportunity to use design to change the world.
Intent:
To encourage social change through design-based dialog.
Questions:
How are prisons used by societies?
What is their affect on those societies, their caretakers, and their occupants?
Challenge:
Design a philosophy on what imprisonment is or should be, and create an architectural design to express that philosophy.

The WORLD Space Creators Awards ask design professionals and students to envision a new concept in shop style, a venue conceived to promote “customer-to-shop interaction”.
Winning designers to be commissioned to be part of a team to use their winning design in a project for real retail space development.
The WORLD Space Creators Awards are given through an open competition that aims not only to discover talented designers from around the world but also to realize their ideas by actually developing winning entries into an actual interior. Entrants can submit nearly any kind of concept that helps to define a shop interior, from overall interior design concept to various shop tools including window or interior displays, mannequins, logos and signs. With the only assumption that submissions will be physically possible to create, we hope participants will allow their imaginations to run freely in creating an idea for their submission.
* This competition is open to professional as well as non-professional entrants of all nationalities and ages.
* Entries may also be made by groups or companies, in which case an individual from that group or company should be named as the entrant.
*Entry forms will be available on the website starting from 10 January 2008.
RECEIPT OF ENTRIES
Opening: Thursday, January 10, 2008
Closing: Thursday, January 31, 2008
*Entries must be received by the close of business in Japan on 31 January 2008.

The second annual ULI European Student Urban Design Competition is a graduate-level competition that is intended to provide an interdisciplinary learning experience for real estate and design students in Europe. Self-formed student teams are asked to provide an urban design and a financial feasibility strategy for a large-scale real life site that ULI has identified somewhere in Europe. Through the formation of multidisciplinary teams, the program encourages cooperation and teamwork among future real estate professionals and the many allied professions, such as architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, historic preservation, engineering, real estate development, finance, psychology, law, and others.
Applications must be submitted by Monday, 17 December 2007. All teams will be notified by E-mail no later than the week of 14 January 2008, as to their eligibility to participate.
This year’s site, to be announced on Monday, 4 February 2008, will be a large-scale urban regeneration site, chosen because it presents complex challenges, needing practicable, innovative solutions that reflect responsible land use. The solutions incorporate design, planning, market potential and feasibility, and development strategies. The submission to the competition will be presentation drawings, tables, schedules, and text.
Student teams are invited to be formed at all European universities (including Turkey and Russia). Teams must consist of five members, with each student responsible for a “function” from the following disciplines: architect, landscape architect, urban planner or geographer, and financial expert. The team can determine which functions are assigned; however, at least one team member must serve as the financial expert and must be enrolled in a business or real estate degree program.

Sudapán is a project by Supersudaca that pretends to bring the territorial key subjects of Latin America and the Caribbean into the global contemporary agenda.
Endless(s)trips is a highly speculative international competition. It promotes the creation of scenarios for new urban models in massive tourism areas.
Endless(s)trips is a space to rethink the relations between the local means, the tourists, the environment, the touristic operators, the State, the infrastructure, the landscape. It is an opportunity to imagine other cities, other territories and other ways of conceiving the way tourism operates in the Caribbean.
The Mayan Riviera is the world’s fastest population growing zone. Estimations for the next decade, (when hotel capacity will have reached 90 000 rooms) consider that the total population along its 140 km long coastline will be superior to 1.5 milion inhabitants.
The Mexican Mayan Riviera is by its size, dynamism and complexity, an intense and urgent case of great potential; an urban laboratory on the Caribbean coast.

On the occasion of the celebration of the magazine’s tenth anniversary, 2G launches an international ideas competition: 2G Competition. Venice Lagoon Park. This theoretical initiative, which does not involve subsequent phases of the project or its execution, is an inducement to free, non-restrictive reflection, the objective being to embark on a worthwhile debate within the profession.
The competition is intended as a reflection on the contemporary metropolis that, growing out of the design of the landscape, pays attention to the tension between global interests and local needs. The site chosen for the unfolding of the competition is the Venice Lagoon, the specific theme being the creation of the Venice Lagoon Park.
The park project will be devoted to reclaiming the urban idea of the lagoon as a complex network of communications and settlements, through a hypothetical re-colonisation of the territory of the lagoon, the decentralisation and atomisation of a programme of uses, and the reclaiming of the idea of the lagoon as an urban constellation necessarily integrated in its natural environment. The programme for planning this rehabilitation will consist of an Urban Park and Lagoon Prototypes.
The competition opens on 1 April 2007 to students and professionals under 40 in the fields of architecture, landscape design, urbanism and related disciplines as long as a student of architecture or an architect belongs to their team.

2nd Advanced Architecture Contest
THE SELF-FAB HOUSE
The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia directed by Vicente Guallart - www.iaac.net - is issuing an international summons to architects, designers and students from around the world, inviting proposals for the construction of self-sufficient dwellings with an emphasis on exploring people’s capacity to self-construct their own homes.
The 2nd Advanced Architecture Contest directed by Lucas Cappelli encourage in this edition of the Self-sufficient housing competition, the design of a “SELF-FAB HOUSE” using industrial or traditional craft-based techniques generated on the basis of the knowledge of the information age, such as digital processes, software-driven manufacturing, skills and know-how in the use of new or established materials, the strategic recycling of other chains of production or familiarity with the historical processes of the construction of habitats in natural environments, revised in the light of new standards of sustainability.
